Waste-Not.

Reduce, reuse, recycle isn't just a saying at Snowbird–it's something we do every day. Whether it's our successful glass recycling program or diverting food out of landfills and into composting systems, waste reduction matters at The Bird.

Snowbird has had a long-established recycling program for paper, aluminum, plastic and cardboard throughout the 4 lodges and the Snowbird Center. In 2017, we increased our efforts resort-wide to include all of Snowbird's buildings and incorporate glass recycling.

Mountains of Glass Recycled at Snowbird

Since the start of the glass recycling program in the summer of 2017, Snowbird has recycled over 330,000 pounds of glass and counting. That's equivalent to the weight of over 27 of our snowcats.

Compost the Most

During the 2020-21 winter season, Snowbird and Alta launched a pilot food composting program to see if it would make a difference.

Since March 2021, Snowbird has composted over 350,000 pounds of food waste, which through an anaerobic digestion process, has been transformed into renewable natural gas. The renewable gas produced is enough to resupply Utah with the energy to heat close to 400 homes per month.

Plastic Reduction

All of Snowbird's lodging properties have switched from single-use plastic shampoo, conditioner and body soap bottles to purchasing these products in bulk and refilling dispensers. The result? Happy guests and almost 4 tons of anticipated plastic waste has been eliminated from our landfills annually. Just another small, but important way Snowbird is working to reduce our waste.
